Step 2: Do you want a holding plate or evaporator cooling?
Evaporator Cooling
Evaporator plates offer a very versatile system for us in a multiple of applications
from weekend sailing to blue water cruising.
The basic format has the following advantages.
- A very constant temperature can be controlled in the box as with domestic
refrigeration equipment.
- Different formats of evaporators allow for example a freezer compartment within
a fridge or a larder type application.
- The system can be used as either fridge or freezer (if plates specified correctly).
- The plates take up minimal space and can be bent to suit the box shape.
- Compressors are compacted, quiet and can run on either 12 or 24volt.
- Systems can be supplied with either air or water-cooled condensing sets.
- Automatic battery protection
This type of equipment must not be confused with the automotive equivalent,
which does not consider the amperage draw on batteries.
In order for an evaporator system to work in a marine environment it is essential
the best quality materials are used with a highly efficient condensing set.
Holding Plate Cooling
The holdover plate systems over the years and has been the backbone of blue
water cruising and charter fleets with minimal battery consumption. The holdover
plate is used to store the cooling created by a compressor which is run for short
periods, by filling the holding plates with a eutectic fluid lower than water
the plates act as in the same way as ice blocks. The advantages of this system
are listed below.
- The system can be run for a set time each day then turned off ensuring no
current drain on the battery.
- A single compressor can be used on one or two plates system either with plates
in separate or the same compartment.
- The holding plates can be used with a number of formats of compressors allowing
the best combination for the application. AC, DC or engine driven.
- Can be used in conjunction with evaporator systems to give the best of both
formats.
In order for holding plate systems to perform correctly adequate size compressors
with correctly insulated compartments are required.
